The Kimono: The Must-Have in Your Wardrobe

No matter if you’re looking to add to your wardrobe a piece that flatters your silhouette, one that’s easy to wear, or one that styles up your look - the kimono does it all for you. Traditionally being a Japanese piece, the kimono once was part of everyday wear. However, slowly but surely, it evolved into being a symbol of status and occupation. That’s how kimonos have grown in popularity over the last decade, never ceasing to surprise us with their newness.

The Kimono: Why Is It A Must-Have Nowadays?

In modern fashion, a kimono is an open lightweight garment with flowy sleeves that are typically designed with a pattern on the material. But it hasn’t always been this way. Rather, history turned it into such an enchanting, accessible piece. Once, during the Edo period (1603-1868), “each individual garment was the biodata of its wearer”. Today, whatsoever, anyone can ensure their wardrobe includes such an elegant and luxurious piece that got its name later on, during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

A piece that still conveys, up to this day, all the years of history that lay long behind it.

Our kimonos are reinterpreted so they:

    • Fit every single shape and size perfectly;
    • Are light, easy, and incredibly flowy to wear;
  • Style up your look, no matter what you are wearing underneath.

  • The Kimono: How to Wear It?

    In Japan, even nowadays, wearing a kimono is similar to wearing a fancy suit or a formal dress. It is the only garment piece you’re putting on, because it’s already made up of numerous parts, such as the Susoyoke and Hadajuban, Nagajuban, Koshi-himo, Date-jime, and Obi. It’s only after you finish putting these on, that you turn to your kimono. But wearing a reinterpreted kimono requires you to figure out what to wear underneath it. However, choosing a suitable outfit isn’t nearly as challenging as you might initially think it is.

    That’s because you can easily mix it up with:

    • Jeans - by combining high-waisted jeans and a white blouse, or a Breton stripe top and metallic shoes;
    • dress - be it a ribbed and slip dress, or a figure-hugging mini or midi one;
    • skirt - no matter if it is a long denim skirt, or a midi and A-line one.

    The Kimono: Where Should You Wear It?

    As the kimono is a symbol of status and occupation in the Japanese culture, nowadays it is only worn on special occasions such as festivals and weddings. Thanks to modern fashion, however, it’s incredibly easy to wear your reinterpreted kimono wherever and whenever you’d like to. No matter if you’re relaxing at home, going to the office, heading to a restaurant to eat brunch with friends, or to a birthday party, it’s impossible not to find a kimono that can perfectly suit the occasion

    For example:

    • If we were to spend the day at home, we’d choose The Pink Kimono, as it’s the kind of piece that would enable us to chill at home in style.
    • Would we be going to the office, we’d go for our SS21 Taki Kimono Black and White since it’s simple, yet flattering and attention-grabbing.
    • And if we were to be heading to a restaurant in the middle of the day, we’d probably choose our Daisuki Kimono.

    It’s safe to say that in modern fashion, the kimono evolved in such a manner that makes it possible to be worn however, whenever, and wherever. And our way of adapting to that is by mixing textures and patterns in such a way that every person who wears them feels unique and special. What comes as a result afterward are these kimonos that make people dream of something more by bringing the elegance of Asia home to their wardrobes. And that’s the newness we aim to surprise every Oh Kimono client with.
